GenoMar is in the process of building up a large grow-out facility in northern peninsular Malaysia, where the joint venture company Trapia Malaysia Sdn Bhd has been established.
Trapia Malaysia was founded in 2007 to develop and implement the company's "egg to plate" vertical integration strategy. The company's vision is to provide the world with the highest standard of eco-friendly farmed fish that is safe, sustainable and 100% traceable.
Trapia is the world’s first company to implement a state-of-the art “egg to plate” tamper-proof traceability system that is DNA-verified - the Genopass verification system. For total consumer confidence, this is truly a verifiable traceability you can trust!
The grow-out farm is located on Lake Temenggor near Banding Island in Perak in northern Malaysia. Lake Temenggor is a very large (150 km2) man-made lake that was completed in 1979.
Malaysian authorities have granted Trapia Malaysia a license to produce up to 20,000 tonnes of tilapia per year on Lake Temenggor.
The facility consists of a hatchery, nursery cages and grow-out cages. The grow-out cages are floating plastic cages of 20 m diameter and the nets are 6 m deep. Each unit consists of 20 cages. Feeding is done by hand, but as the production facility grows, automatic feeding systems will be installed.
